Traveling with Zepbound or Mounjaro: Tips & Tricks
Traveling can be an exciting adventure, but for those managing their health with medications like Zepbound or Mounjaro (semaglutide or tirzepatide-based treatments), there are unique considerations to keep in mind. Whether you’re embarking on a weekend getaway or a long-haul trip, a little preparation ensures you stay on track with your health goals while enjoying your journey.
Understanding Your Medication
Both Zepbound and Mounjaro belong to a class of medications used to manage Type 2 diabetes and are increasingly prescribed for weight loss. These injectable medications require consistent dosing schedules to maintain their effectiveness. Traveling doesn’t mean you have to miss your routine, but it does mean adapting to your new environment.
Pre-Travel Preparations
1. Pack Your Supplies
Create a checklist of all the items you’ll need:
- Medication: Pack the exact doses needed for the duration of your trip, plus extras in case of delays.
- Needles and Alcohol Swabs: Ensure you have enough for each injection.
- Sharps Container: A travel-friendly sharps disposal solution can help you safely store used needles.
2. Refrigeration Requirements
Zepbound and Mounjaro require refrigeration until use. Keep the medication between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C) to maintain efficacy. For travel:
- Use an insulated cooler bag with ice packs for transit. Here is my favorite that has worked well.
- Once at your destination, store the medication in a refrigerator.
- Eli Lilly states that it can be stored at room temperature (up to 86°F (30°C))for up to 21 days. After bringing the medicine up to room temp, the manufacture states DO NOT return them to refrigeration.
If refrigeration isn’t possible, note that both medications can stay at room temperature (below 86°F or 30°C) for up to 21 days.
Traveling by Air
1. TSA Guidelines
Medications, including injectable ones, are allowed in carry-on bags. For a smooth process:
- Carry the prescription label with your medication.
- Pack needles and sharps responsibly to avoid delays.
- Declare your medication at security checkpoints if required.
- Check out this handy Pen/Insulin Carrying Case which is great for your carry-on luggage and is TSA Approved!
2. Keep Medication Accessible
Always keep Zepbound or Mounjaro in your carry-on. Checked luggage can be delayed or exposed to extreme temperatures, compromising your medication.
Traveling Across Time Zones
Adjusting your injection schedule when crossing time zones can be tricky but manageable:
- If your time zone change is minimal (1-2 hours), stick to your usual schedule.
- For significant time zone shifts, gradually adjust by a few hours in the days leading up to your trip or consult your healthcare provider for guidance.
On-the-Go Tips
1. Be Mindful of Meals
Zepbound and Mounjaro often impact appetite. Plan meals around your travel schedule to ensure you have healthy options available.
2. Hydration is Key
Air travel and long trips can dehydrate you. Stay hydrated to prevent side effects like nausea, common with these medications.
3. Emergency Contacts
Know where the nearest pharmacy or medical facility is located at your destination. Carry a card with emergency contacts, including your healthcare provider.
At Your Destination
- Refrigeration Upon Arrival
Immediately store your medication in the refrigerator if it’s still within the required temperature range. - Maintain Routine
Stick to your injection schedule and continue tracking progress if you’re using a weight loss app or logbook.
Final Thoughts
Traveling with Zepbound or Mounjaro doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation, you can enjoy your journey without compromising your health goals. Always consult with your healthcare provider before traveling to address specific concerns or dosage adjustments.
Bon voyage, and may your adventures be as fulfilling as your commitment to better health!
