The TSA Tango: A GLP-1 Adventure (Now with Fewer Security Shenanigans!)

If you have followed our podcast, you may have met our our Co-Host Sarah. She told me this rather humorous experience bringing traveling across the pond for the first time after starting her Zepbound journey. She was brimming with excitement, ready to jet off to her hometown outside of London, England. Family reunion dreams in her head, the perfect outfits in her suitcase, and a meticulously planned itinerary. What she didn’t plan for? A painfully awkward 10-minute interrogation at airport security over her GLP-1 medication.

“Ma’am, what exactly is this?” the TSA agent inquired, lifting her prefilled injection pen like it was an unidentified space object. Flustered and feeling like she was on trial, Sarah launched into a TED Talk-worthy explanation about GLP-1 receptor agonists and metabolic health, complete with hand gestures. The agent, looking more perplexed than before, eventually waved her through, but not before Sarah learned an important travel lesson: preparation is key when flying with GLP-1s. If you’re on a GLP-1 medication like Mounjaro, Zepbound, or Wegovy and planning to travel, let’s make sure you avoid the TSA Tango. Here are the best travel hacks to keep your journey smooth and stress-free!

1. Pack Your Medication Like a Pro

GLP-1s typically require refrigeration, so if you’re flying, pack them in a cooler bag with ice packs and always keep them in your carry-on—never your checked luggage (unless you like playing high-stakes baggage roulette). TSA technically allows medications through security, but flashing a doctor’s note or prescription label can make things go a lot smoother. When passing through security, inform TSA agents about your injectable medication. Be prepared for it to be scanned separately and keep a copy of your prescription or a letter of medical necessity handy to facilitate the process. If you are staying in a hotel, skip the mini-fridge and ask the hotel staff for a proper refrigerator for medications. Chances are they will bring one. Eli Lilly states that it can be stored at room temperature (up to 86°F (30°C))for up to 21 days. After bringing the medicine up to room temp, the manufacture states DO NOT return them to refrigeration. If refrigeration isn’t possible, note that both medications can stay at room temperature (below 86°F or 30°C) for up to 21 days.

Pro Tip: Some users have reported that security agents don’t recognize GLP-1 pens. If that happens, calmly explain it’s a prescribed injectable medication. If needed, ask for a supervisor or refer to TSA’s medical exemptions policy.  Gel packs are allowed if frozen solid at screening. Otherwise, they’re subject to liquid rule.

2. Time Your Injections Like a World Traveler

Changing time zones? Plan ahead so your injection schedule doesn’t go haywire. If you need to shift your dose, do so gradually over a day or two rather than skipping or doubling up. Many long-term GLP-1 users swear by setting reminders on their phones, because let’s be honest, who actually remembers things without a notification these days? Hey Siri, remind me to give myself a shot!

3. Hydration Is Not Optional (Seriously, Drink Water!)

Airplane cabins are basically deserts with terrible Wi-Fi, and GLP-1s can suppress thirst signals. Airplane travel is a recipe for dehydration disaster. If there is one day a year for you to focus on your hydration goals, it would be the day you are flying on an airplane! Carry a refillable water bottle and sip consistently. If you have heard the horror stories of ariplane toiles then you know you do not want to deal with travel constipation at 30,000 feet. Pro Tip: Throw some electrolyte sachets into your hand luggage. You will thank me later.

4. Snack Smart. Airport Food Is a Trap

Airport food is both expensive and pretty terrible for GLP-1 users. Since you may feel full faster, opt for protein-rich snacks like nuts, cheese sticks, or protein bars instead of overpriced, greasy meals. Bonus: Packing your own snacks means you won’t have to take out a second mortgage for an airport sandwich.

5. Research Your Destination’s Food Scene

Not all places are rich in high-protein, nutrient-dense meals. Do a little research beforehand so you’re not stuck in a carb-heavy nightmare. Check menus ahead of time and scope out restaurants that align with your dietary needs. Your future, non-bloated self will thank you. You will sleep better and get over any jet lag with ease.

6. Keep Moving to Fight the Sluggishness

Long flights and road trips can make you feel sluggish, and GLP-1s sometimes slow digestion. Combat this by walking around the airport, stretching during layovers, and getting movement in whenever possible.

Pro Tip: If you’re flying long-haul, set a reminder to get up and walk every couple of hours to keep the circulation flowing.

7. Bring Backup Supplies Like a Travel Genius

Flights get delayed. Bags go missing. Be prepared with an extra dose of medication, alcohol swabs, and a small sharps container. Keep them in your personal item just in case you and your luggage get separated.

8. Plan for Nausea—Because It Can Strike Anytime

If you’re still adjusting to GLP-1s, nausea can hit out of nowhere. Bring ginger chews, nausea bands, or over-the-counter remedies so you’re not blindsided mid-flight or on a long bus ride with no escape. If you experience nausea, hydrate yourself through it!

9. Communicate with Travel Buddies

If you’re traveling with friends or family, give them a heads-up about your medication schedule and potential side effects. This way, they won’t be offended if you’re not diving headfirst into every meal or need to take a breather.

10. The Big Question: Should You Skip a Dose on Vacation?

Tempted to skip a dose while traveling? It might seem like an easy way to avoid potential side effects, but it could also lead to increased appetite, weight regain, or unpredictable blood sugar levels. If you’re concerned, talk to your doctor beforehand. Some users adjust their schedule slightly to minimize side effects while still staying on track. Remember, you can still enjoy quality nutrient rich foods while staying on your medication, just enjoy less! Skipping a dose just because you think you will enjoy your vacation more is an individual choice, but you will feel even more guilt and grief when you get home. Stay steady!

11. Enjoy the Adventure—GLP-1s and All!

Taking GLP-1s doesn’t mean you can’t have an amazing trip. Whether it’s savoring local flavors in moderation, staying hydrated, or pacing yourself, a little mindfulness goes a long way. You deserve to enjoy your vacation without the stress.

The TSA Tango: The Sequel

And what about Sarah? On her most recent trip, she confidently presented her GLP-1 pen, prescription label in hand, and sailed through security like a seasoned traveler. No interrogations, no awkward explanations, just smooth sailing. Lesson learned: A little preparation makes all the difference.
