The Best Tips for Injection Day While Taking GLP-1 Medication

Injection Day tips!

If you’re on a GLP-1 medication like Zepbound, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, optimizing your injection day routine can enhance effectiveness and reduce side effects. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned user, here are some of the best tips to make injection day smooth and stress-free. Ensuring your injection day goes smoothly will have a significant impact on the next couple of days, especially the impact to side effects!

A Little Humor to Start

Let’s be honest, taking your injection may or my not be the highlight of your week. I once forgot it was injection day and spent the morning wondering why I felt like a slightly deflated balloon. Well it turned out that my routine was thrown off because I ran out of coffee, which somehow led to me forgetting my shot. I did not realize why my entire day was in chaos until late in the afternoon when I realized I was operating without caffeine. Moral of the story: coffee first, then injection.

Pick a Consistent Injection Time

Consistency is key for maximizing the benefits of your GLP-1 medication. Choose a specific day and time each week to take your injection. Setting a reminder on your phone or writing it in a planner can help you stay on track. The time of day does not matter with regards to the medicinal impact to your body. However, it does have an impact to your routine and how you manage around it. Many people swear by doing it mid morning, while others prefer taking their injection later in the day, so they potentially sleep through any side effects.

Weekend Injections: Some users prefer taking their injections on Fridays or Saturdays to utilize the weekend for rest and side effect management.

Evening Injections: Administering the injection at night allows you to sleep through initial side effects, making them less noticeable.

My advice here is, you do you boo!

Rotate Injection Sites

Injecting in the same spot repeatedly can cause irritation for some on their skin. Rotate between your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm to prevent discomfort. Ensure the area is clean and dry before injecting. I recommend letting your shot get to room temperature for 30 minutes, as many times it will take any sting away that some experience.

Stay Hydrated

GLP-1 medications can slow digestion, sometimes leading to nausea or constipation. Drinking plenty of water on injection day (and throughout the week) helps your body process the medication more efficiently and keeps side effects at bay. Hydrate as much as you can while on GLP-1 medications, but specifically on Injection day! Do not forget to supplement your hydration with electrolytes.

Eat a Light, Balanced Meal (With Plenty of Protein!)

Injection day is probably not going to be the best day to have a Big Mac attack. To minimize nausea, avoid heavy, greasy, or overly large meals before and after your injection. Opt for lean proteins, whole grains, and fiber-rich foods to keep your stomach settled. Protein is especially important when taking GLP-1 medications, as they can suppress appetite, leading to unintentional muscle loss. Make sure you’re getting enough protein through foods like chicken, fish, tofu, eggs, or protein bars or shakes to support muscle retention and overall health. Here is a pro-tip: For dessert, mix your favorite flavor of protein shake with 1 packet of sugar free pudding mix. Protein Pudding for the win!

Avoid Alcohol and Sugary Drinks

Alcohol and high-sugar beverages can worsen potential side effects like nausea, dizziness, or dehydration. If you do drink, keep it in moderation and monitor how your body reacts on injection day.

Listen to Your Body

Some people feel fine after their injection, while others may experience mild side effects like fatigue or nausea. Pay attention to how your body responds and adjust your schedule accordingly. If you feel unwell, prioritize rest and light activities. Sleep is your friend!

Keep Track of Side Effects

Maintaining a log of any side effects can help you and your doctor make necessary adjustments. Note any changes in appetite, digestion, or energy levels to ensure you are on the right dosage.

Store Your Medication Properly

Improper storage can reduce the effectiveness of your GLP-1 medication. Keep your pen or vial in the refrigerator unless otherwise directed, and avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures and sunlight.

Have a Plan for Managing Nausea

If nausea is a concern, try ginger tea, peppermint, or small protein-rich snacks to settle your stomach. Hydration, and having a small snack. like crackers or pretzels seems to make my nausea disappear. Eating smaller meals throughout the day can also help manage symptoms.

Don’t Stress

Feeling anxious about your injection? Take a few deep breaths, practice mindfulness, or distract yourself with a favorite show or podcast. The more relaxed you are, the easier the process will be.
